Deadline: May 31, 2025

The Department of Political Science at the University of Zurich invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the research group of Professor Karsten Donnay, to begin on September 1, 2025 (or later by agreement). This opportunity is part of a collaborative research project with Dr. Rainer Gabriel at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), focused on improving the uptake of social welfare benefits by addressing language and administrative barriers through AI-driven translation tools.

The project aims to adapt and implement an open-source AI tool to translate complex administrative documents into plain language, thereby supporting eligible recipients in accessing social benefits. The successful candidate will work closely with social services and other partners to validate, implement, and evaluate the tool’s effectiveness in real-world settings, including the design and execution of field experiments.

Requirements:
– Master’s degree (completed or near completion) in political science, another social science, or social work; candidates from social work should demonstrate data science proficiency.
– Strong motivation to use digital tools for addressing real-world social challenges.
– Proven quantitative research and data science skills (including programming in Python, data analysis in R or Python, and experience with field experiments).
– Interest or experience in AI tools, natural language processing, or plain language communication is a strong asset.
– Good understanding of public administration, welfare states, and issues related to non-take-up of social benefits.
– Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary, cross-institutional teams.
– Proficiency in both German and English.
– Creativity, open-mindedness, and curiosity.

What is offered:
– Fully funded PhD position for three years, with possible extension to a fourth year.
– Competitive salary (approx. 57,084 CHF/year at 80% employment).
– Access to leading academic environments at the University of Zurich and ZHAW.
– Engagement in a high-impact, interdisciplinary research project with opportunities for academic and professional development.
– No mandatory teaching duties, but optional compensated teaching opportunities may be available.
– Workspace provided at both the University of Zurich and ZHAW.

Application Process:
Interested candidates should submit their application—including a letter of interest, CV, writing sample (e.g., MA thesis), university transcripts, and contact details for two referees—via the following link: www.ipz.uzh.ch/de/ueber-uns/offene-stellen/2025-PhD-Donnay.html
