Project Details

This position is funded by the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) consolidator grant ‘INTERACT’ and supervised by Prof. Tong Li, Chair of Atomic Scale Characterisation. The successful candidate will join a collaborative and highly skilled team within the Chair of Atomic-scale Characterization at RUB. The research will leverage the ZGH’s world-class facilities, including more than ten major microscopy platforms such as atom probe tomography, aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and focused ion beam systems.

The project is full-time and fixed-term for three years, with the contract extending until the end of August 2029. The position is salaried according to the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L), pay grade E13 TV-L, ensuring competitive compensation and benefits. Notably, there is no teaching obligation if the position is funded by third-party funds, allowing full dedication to research.

Candidate Profile

Ideal applicants for this PhD position will have:

– An excellent master’s degree in materials science, electrochemistry, inorganic or organic chemistry.
– Project experience with lithium metal or ion batteries.
– Familiarity with assembling battery cells and performing electrochemical cycling tests for both non-aqueous and aqueous systems.
– Solid knowledge of electrochemistry or relevant project experience.
– Hands-on experience operating scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and/or focused ion beam (FIB) equipment.
– High proficiency in spoken and written English.
– Strong motivation, eagerness to learn, and the ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Additional desirable skills include experience with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of battery interfaces.
