About the University or Research Institute
Université Gustave Eiffel is a prominent French public research university, recognized for its innovation and interdisciplinary approach in engineering, urban planning, and mobility studies. Located in Lyon, with collaborative ties to Paris, the university is at the forefront of research in transportation systems and sustainable urban development. The EMob-Lab, where this postdoctoral role is based, offers a dynamic research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and a diverse network of experts. France, renowned for its vibrant academic culture and commitment to scientific excellence, provides an enriching setting for researchers aiming to make a tangible impact on society.
Research Topic and Significance
The central focus of this postdoctoral position is the development of multimodal data fusion methods to estimate dynamic Origin–Destination (OD) matrices using heterogeneous urban mobility datasets. This research is part of the MobiFusion project, a France 2030 Sci-Ty pre-maturation initiative dedicated to pioneering digital solutions for sustainable and decarbonized mobility systems. In an era marked by rapid urbanization and increasing environmental concerns, optimizing mobility networks through advanced data analytics is essential for reducing carbon footprints and enhancing urban quality of life. Accurate modeling of OD matrices enables cities to better understand and manage travel demand, inform public transport planning, and foster the shift towards greener mobility solutions.
Project Details
The successful candidate will join EMob-Lab in Lyon, collaborating closely with the GRETTIA team in Paris, including leading researchers Latifa Oukhellou and Etienne Côme. The project involves integrating and analyzing diverse mobility datasets, such as mobile phone data, traffic measurements, public transport ticketing information, and other mobility sensing sources. The goal is to create robust, scalable methods for data fusion and dynamic modeling that can support real-time decision-making in urban mobility management. The position offers a 12-month full-time contract, with a flexible start date between July and October 2026. The salary ranges from approximately €2,900 to €3,900 gross per month, depending on experience. Additional benefits include the possibility of partial remote work and funding for travel and conferences, fostering both professional growth and work–life balance.
Candidate Profile
The ideal applicant will have a PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Transportation Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Candidates should demonstrate strong proficiency in Python, machine learning techniques, optimization, statistical modeling, and large-scale data analysis. Experience with mobility analysis, spatio-temporal modeling, graph or network analysis, and multimodal data fusion is highly desirable. The project seeks a researcher with a passion for addressing real-world challenges in urban mobility, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary team.
Application Process
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with priority consideration given to those received before June 15th, 2026. To apply, candidates should prepare a motivation letter, a CV including a list of publications, and one or two representative papers. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.
