The School of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Tartu, Estonia, announces an open call for three full-time, four-year paid PhD positions in Theology and Religious Studies. These positions are open to candidates interested in pursuing doctoral research in a wide range of topics within the field, with no predetermined research focus required.
Applicants are encouraged to propose their own research topics. The School is particularly active in areas such as Ancient Near East studies, Biblical Studies, Orthodox Christianity, Secularization and Non-religion, Contemporary Religious Developments, Dialogue of Science and Religion, Religious Education, Method and Theory in the Study of Religion, and the History of Christianity in Estonia, though proposals from other areas are also welcome. Prospective applicants are advised to contact potential supervisors prior to submitting their application.
Requirements:
– Master’s degree or equivalent (not strictly limited to Theology or Religious Studies)
– Official copies of BA and MA diplomas and diploma supplements in original language, plus official English translations if applicable
– If graduating from a master’s program in 2025, submission of the most recent transcript is required, with graduation documents to be submitted by mid-August 2025
– All applications must be submitted through the designated application portal
Application deadline for candidates with a master’s degree from a university outside Estonia is May 15, 2025. (Deadline for candidates with a master’s degree from an Estonian university is June 15, 2025.) Successful applicants will commence studies in September 2025.
